Chaos: Three Mine Security guards kill gold panner
Three Redwing mine security guards were recently arrested by police after they shot dead a gold panner while seriously injuring another one in Rezende area under Chief Mutasa.
The guards – Cleton Matsika, 35, William Mutuswa, 46, of Nyamutenha village, Nyamaropa Nyanga and Benedict Chikanda, 53, of Samukange village Makoni – have since appeared before magistrate courts.
They were charged with murder and attempted murder and remanded to September 15 on $50 bail each.
The deceased was identified as Tafadzwa Lewani, 21, of Bush Bar Complex in Penhalonga. He was reportedly shot on the left side of the abdomen and died on the spot.
His colleague David Madzikatire sustained serious injuries and admitted at a local hospital.
Manicaland province deputy police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Luxson Chananda said on August 26, and at around 0900hrs, Lewani in company of Adam Araton, 33, David Madzikatire and some three unnamed colleagues went to Redwing Mine to illegally pan for gold.
Mine security guards spotted the panners and fired at them. One bullet hit and killed Lewani on spot while seriously injuring Madzikatire.
Sensing danger, other panners fled and later ganged up with their colleagues and went to the mine to fight security guards who had returned to the mine to report the matter to their superiors.
Commotion ensued as the panners reportedly ganged up and started pelting the guards who had camped at Redwing mine offices with stones.
Realising that they were being overpowered, the security guards fired shots to disperse the irate panners.
Police were later called to quell the disturbances. A number of youths in Penhalonga area are unemployed and have resorted to gold panning to eke a living.
Youths interviewed said they will not be deterred by armed security guards as they have no alternative source of livelihood.
