Joice Mujuru: We know how elections are rigged
THE Zimbabwe People First (ZimPF) opposition party says it knows how President Robert Mugabe rigs polls and plans to use the 92-year-old leader’s tactics against him at the next elections which are due in 2018.
ZimPF was formed by disgruntled former Zanu PF senior officials who were fired by President Robert Mugabe on allegations of plotting for his ouster.
Led by Mugabe’s axed deputy, Joice Mujuru, the group denies the coup allegations.
National spokesman, Jealousy Mawarire, told a public meeting in Harare last Thursday that ZimPF has, in its ranks, former top Mugabe aides who knew how the veteran leader manipulated elections.
“We have people with vast experience in our camp who are good at overhauling things; who have killed people and seen how elections were manipulated,” said Mawarire.
“That is why we are saying – why don’t you come join us now so we work together as a mass force so we work together, because we know how an election is won.
“The Gutus successfully won the elections but they failed to take over power,” he said pointing at Obert Gutu, the MDC-T spokesperson, who was among the panelists at the meeting which was organised by Mass Public Opinion Institute (MPOI).
Mawarire continued: “Someone here, at one time asked, a question saying: ‘how serious are you about effecting change?’
“I say Baba, so you say Didymus Mutasa, who was Minister of CIOs, he would fail to tell us how to do play the game well?”
“What would he be there for then? That is the reason why we are keeping him,” said Mawarire cheers from the audience.
Mutasa, a former state security minister, is one of the founders of ZimPF but faces charges of orchestrating the brutal suppression of Mugabe’s political opponents while still a top Zanu PF official.
“You could criticize him (Mutasa) and say he did this and that; but did he not ask for forgiveness?,” said Mawarire.
“Even Joice Mujuru apologised on several occasions saying that we messed up but please give us an opportunity.”
He added: “Do not worry if you vote for us, we know how power is taken. We have brigadier-generals on our side.
“You could attack them for what they did during the war and at other times, but when it comes to negotiating power because here people have a tendency of saying soldiers are the ones who will give troubles whenever Zanu PF has been defeated in an election but we have our own soldiers.
“They will simply order their mates to retire to the homesteads.”
