Mighty Warriors Out of Rio Games
Zimbabwe’s Mighty Warriors have crushed out of the 2016 Rio Olympics following a 6-1 defeat by supercharged Australia in the women’s soccer competition.
On the other hand, Zimbabwe’s Micheen Thorncroft and Andrew Peebles advanced to the next level in the rowing competition.

Zimbabwe’s head of delegation Titus Zvomuya, said despite the Mighty Warriors’ loss morale was high in the team’s camp following superb performances by Peebles and Thornycroft, who has advanced to the semi-finals of the women’s single sculls in rowing. The finals are set for Saturday.
“Mighty warriors played their last group game against Australia at 4pm Brazil time in Salvador. Sadly the team lost 6-1 to Australia. This marks the end of the Olympic journey for the Mighty Warriors. Well done girls for fighting to the end. Lots of lessons learnt,” the Zimbabwe Olympics Committee posted on their Facebook page after the match.
The Mighty Warriors’ journey in Group F was not easy after they suffered a 6-1 beating in their first match against Germany then succumbed to Canada 3-1 before bowing out of the competition after getting another 6-1 loss to Australia.
In swimming, Zimbabwean Sean Gunn set a new national record for the 100 meter men`s freestyle event. Sean participated in heat number two and came second in a time of 50.87 seconds. He, however, did not make it to the semifinals. Zimbabwe’s equestrian jumper Camilla Kruger also put up a great performance.
Alvaro Andrade also gave an update on the press conference held in Brazil on Tuesday to discuss the banning of protesters at the venue which has been upheld by authorities running the games. zimbabwenewsday
